In Hawaii, dining locally generally means great fresh fish and fresh tropical fruit.
It also means a blend of the original Hawaiian ingredients with the influences of
Japanese, Chinese, Spanish and Philippine cultures, and on the coast of Kona, it
would probably include a great cup of Kona coffee in the morning or after a meal.
Here is a list of just some of our favorites:
Aloha Angel Café, (808) 322-3383, website, mapIn Kainaliu Town between Kailua-Kona and Captain Cook. The Aloha Theatre features a full schedule of events including films, concerts, plays and performing arts of both local and international themes. The Aloha Angel Cafe adjoins the Theatre and offers a robust breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu. The Aloha Angel bakery prepares all of their pastries, cakes and cookies daily. Check out their website for show/events schedule, dining menu, historical information on the building.
Coffee Shack, The, (808) 328-9555, website, mapLocated up the hill on Mamalohoa Highway. Serves gourmet sandwiches, pastries, fresh baked breads, pizza and other specialties, and of course, great coffee.
Keei Café, (808) 322-9992, mapLocated at the top of the hill on the Mamalohoa Highway, 11 in Kainaliu. This restaurant is a favorite of mine, self-describing their menu as Pacific Rim cuisine which fuses Hawaiian, Asian and American food. They feature creative dishes using fresh, flavorful seafood, game, pasta and beef and many other delights to satisfy the most discerning palate.
Royal Thai Café, (808) 322-8424, website, mapThe decor is bright and upbeat, but it's the food that draws in the crowd. With the menu featuring dishes, such as Pineapple Fried Rice, Panang Beef and Chicken Satay for an appetizer, your craving for Thai food will be more than fulfilled.
Teshima's Restaurant, (808) 322-9140, mapA local favorite restaurant that serves traditional, home style Japanese kaukau with specialties on the menu including tempura, miso soup, and green tea ice cream.
